ARE ROCK STARS REALLY ACTORS?
When I hear people say "Man I want my band to make it" I wonder to myself what that really means. Yes the first second you read this youthink "Da it means on the radio, on mtv, a tour, your making money, your a rock star etc"... But Actors make money, they make money frombeing a "BRAND NAME" so is making it really just code for becoming a brand name?
So I would be impressed if a dude in a band said " You man, I want to be a brand one- day". I have no reason why that would impress meI suppose it's due to big business turning bands into puppets i.e. a branded product the same as pepsi, coke or taco bell. <<< Random...Hummmm must be lunch Mexican sounds good!
Anyways so is being a brand really sinister? Is being on some BIG RECORD LABEL the end of your band as you know it? I hear interviews alltime how record labels control bands, what they record, the sound, the image, their lives etc... Record labels nowadays are looking for a banthat is a sure thing, for example a good band to use is Anberlin.
Anberlin is a good band, their music is full of hooks, the band stacked with talent. Anberlin was with Tooth & Nail Records now they arewith Universal Republic Records. Here they are and they rock, slam, kick ass, make sure to check out our review on the band or feel freeto talk about them in the forums! {youtube}/1Hl_NBTMELo{/youtube} Video
Anberlin has a great singer, Love his voice... The bands hooks are amazing but what really stands out is the bands marketing. The followingfor Anberlin is in the millions, Most anywhere you go they are big, I mean really big! 53,000,000 million views on myspace is allot! 3 millionviews on youtube ALLOT <<<<<<<< MY Point They are a brand, they made the record labels a ton of money... The band has a MEGABIG Following... So the brand is selling, the muisc top notch "The song impossible" Very smooth, full of energy! So my conclusion, if you live, breathe and crap muisc I suppose it don't matter if you are a brand, a product because you live and die to makemusic, to be on stage... Your life is music and your dream about someone taking care of all the business crap... But with record labels taking50% of merchandise from bands nowadays due to the lack of album sales and putting their greedy little got rich in the 80's and 90's hands intothe best bands of today... It's sad to see big corps robbing bands but I guess if we are willing to become a brand, a coke, or pepsi, or fordsand we relegate ourselves to something so impersonal and relinquish the control of our music to be a juke box. I suppose if your cool withthat for money, hit chicks and doing what you love then who know, maybe it's a dream come true for the 1 out of 1 million bands that are lucky enough to break it big! So what do you think?
Do you think it's cool to have some paper pusher tell you what to play? Is it your dream to be a Brand name and write music in a cookie cutterformat for the better good of the brand? Tell us your thoughts! Our forum is open to all views and if anyone can shed a light out there on the upside of being indie, or how record labels are good or they suck let the forum know!
